Smokin' Joe

Tuesday, August 30, 2005
While I was waiting for the bus this morning I noticed a young woman (about 19 years old) standing near a group of other bus-waiters. She was dressed for summer, with an old t-shirt and some shorts, and had the look of a natural model - no make-up, her hair pulled back into a ponytail - a simple beauty.

Then she pulled out a pack of smokes and lit one up. Ugh. Smoking. It's so nasty. And it will make her look almost twice her age by the time she's 30-something. Although I don't know this woman, and I don't remember seeing her before, I was saddened by her addiction and by what it will do to her natural beauty.

And why wouldn't I be? According to the American Heart Association "nicotine addiction has historically been one of the hardest addictions to break." They go on to say:

When a person smokes a cigarette, the body responds immediately to the chemical nicotine in the smoke. Nicotine causes a short-term increase in blood pressure, heart rate and the flow of blood from the heart. It also causes the arteries to narrow. The smoke includes carbon monoxide, which reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry. This, combined with the nicotine effects, creates an imbalance between the demand for oxygen by the cells and the amount of oxygen the blood can supply.

My dad smoked when I was a kid. I used to stay home with him on Sunday nights while my mom and siblings went to church. He smoked Chesterfield, non-filtered cigarettes (the preferred brand of James Dean) and I remember loving the smell of them. Not like smokes today; the smell disgusts me.

I've always said that one of the greatest temptations I had in life was smoking. Perhaps the craving came from all the second-hand smoke I breathed in as a child. Who knows. All I know is that I'm glad I never became a smoker, with all it's "cool" yellowed-fingered benefits.

Life 101

Monday, August 15, 2005
Peace. Man, is that ever important to have in your life. It protects you from so many things: distraction, anxiety, fear, performance, etc.

When John the Baptist was born, his father Zechariah said that John would be a prophet who would go ahead of Jesus to prepare His ways - one being, showing us the way, one foot at a time, down the path of peace.

Peace in Hebrew does not mean merely freedom from trouble; it means all that makes for a person's highest good; and through Christ a man is enabled to walk in the ways that lead to everything that means life, and no longer to all that means death.

Colossians 3:15 says that we are even CALLED to peace! And that we should "let the peace of Christ keep (us) in step with each other."

How? Well... if we pray about stuff, the Bible says that the peace of God will guard (our) hearts and (our) minds. Sound like a good place to start! Plus, if we allow our mind to be controlled by God's Spirit we are promised LIFE and PEACE! That should help us keep up with each other!

Maybe that's why I used to always autograph my CDs with this prayer:

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." [Romans 15:13]

Because, ya know... I'm "into" keeping the peace.

Experiencing life! Posted by Picasa

Fodder & Mash

Friday, August 05, 2005
"The oxen and donkeys that work the soil will eat fodder and mash, spread out with fork and shovel." [Isaiah 30:24]

I saw an advertisement for a new TV channel the other day. The ad boasts: "Why experience life when you can watch it! Razer TV."

Welcome to the postmodern world - an age in which all principles are questioned, all opinions and beliefs are proclaimed equally valid — if not equally true — and everything is considered relative.

For example, I got invited to Pagan Pride Day! Pagan Pride Day is part of an international movement that began in the U.S. and now has festivals being coordinated by volunteers throughout the world. The goal is to educate the public regarding various alternative spiritual lifestyles while also promoting tolerance within the community through such education.

[I may just accept the invitation. Purely for research purposes, of course.]

Fodder: (noun) 1: something fed to domestic animals; especially: coarse food for cattle, horses, or sheep; 2: inferior or readily available material used to supply a heavy demand [fodder for tabloids]

Scary. All the junk around us, that seems to be in high demand. Even blogs. Gosh, I hope my blog won't be reduced to endless fodder, but with the countless blogs out there in blogland I am sure I'm at risk.

Think about it. Me and other bloggers, blogging about our daily life experiences, etc., while friends and family read along. Yeah, yeah. I know. I recently said that I wished all my friends had blogs, but maybe they aren't experiencing enough life to write one!

Which is why they read mine. Or yours. Or why they like reality TV. And watch it. Cuz they would rather look in on someone else's life rather than experience it themselves.
